“To accomplish great things, we must not only act but also dream, not only plan but also believe.” Anatole France

For me January is usually a time for dreaming and believing, for pouring myself into words and imaginary worlds, for writing my heart out. There’s something deeply satisfying about hunkering down and living inside a story when all the world is white and silent.

This January, though, my life is pulling me in another direction. We won’t be moving for a couple of months yet, but already corrugated boxes and to-do lists are taking over the house. The visa process alone is enough to drive me mad. There are also medical records to order and shipping manifests to fill out, and a multitude of possessions to give away, and oh, yes — a much-loved 1920s bungalow to sell. Whew! It’s clear that 2010 is going to be one busy year.

But amid the nitty-gritty of planning this move, I’m going to try to keep Anatole France’s words in mind, and make sure that I also allow myself time for dreaming and believing.

So Happy New Year, one and all! May it be bright and beautiful, and may we all have plenty of opportunities to dream and believe — in our stories, in ourselves, and in the world around us.
